In 1992, Steve Sonntag
recorded Take Twelve--- A Dozen Jazz Duets, with Steve playing both parts.
A review of this recording was printed in the International Trumpet
Guild Journal in February, 1995, written by John Entzi, of Northwest Missouri
State University:
"This book
of treble clef duets is written for intermediate to advanced players and
works very well for trumpets. The author lists general notes at the beginning.
These are helpful, as he gives common sense advise about his book and music.
The best remarks concern the patterning of these duets after standard jazz
chord progressions. The performance notes list very specific remarks concerning
each duet. Attention is given to metronome marks, forms of the tunes and
the chord progression from which each duet is derived.
I enjoyed playing
the variety of jazz styles offered in these duets. The styles varied from
jazz waltz, blues, AABA forms to whole-tone and "Lombardo-esque" sections.
I strongly encourage everyone to order the accompaniment cassette when
buying this book. The cassette will help you with all the musical aspects
of these duets, and be an incentive for the players.
These duets are more
suited for advanced players. Each selection is very readable, numbered
and copied in a neat manuscript. The collection is a nice addition to the
jazz duet repertoire. We will all have fun playing and performing Take
Twelve."
